The recent death of Amrit Mondal, also known as Samrat, has added to the growing unease in Bangladesh. Reports indicate that the 29-year-old Hindu man was beaten to death by a mob in Rajbari’s Pangsha sub-district late on Wednesday. Authorities claim Mondal was a “listed criminal” and the leader of a gang called “Samrat Bahini,” involved in extortion and other criminal activities.
He had multiple cases against him, including murder, and an arrest warrant. Police stated that Mondal was trying to extort money from a villager when he was caught by locals, beaten, and later died at a hospital after being rescued by police. The government has stated that preliminary investigations suggest this was not a communal attack but rather a result of his alleged criminal activities.
This incident comes just days after the brutal lynching of 27-year-old Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh on December 18, 2025. Das, a factory worker, was accused of blasphemy during a factory event and subsequently beaten to death by a mob. His body was then tied to a tree and set on fire. However, both the Bangladesh Police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) found no direct evidence to support the blasphemy allegations. The interim government condemned the lynching, vowing to bring the perpetrators to justice, and has since arrested several individuals in connection with his death.
