Details Emerge from the Andhra Pradesh Train Accident

In the early hours of Monday, a tragic incident occurred near Yelamanchili Railway Station in Andhra Pradesh’s Anakapalli district, when the Tatanagar-Ernakulam Express (Train No. 18189) caught fire. The blaze, believed to have started around 1:30 AM, rapidly engulfed two air-conditioned coaches, designated B1 and M2. Preliminary investigations suggest that overheated brakes on the B1 coach may have caused sparks and flames, leading to the inferno.

The alert loco pilots quickly noticed the thick smoke near Yelamanchili and brought the train to an immediate halt, allowing for the swift evacuation of most passengers. Out of 82 passengers in the B1 coach and 75-76 in the M2/B2 coach, many escaped safely. However, a 70-year-old passenger named Chandrasekhar Sundar from Vijayawada was tragically trapped inside the B1 coach and succumbed to the burns.

Emergency services, including firefighting teams from Anakapalli, Elamanchili, and Nakkapalli, quickly responded to the scene, battling the fire for several hours. Despite their efforts, both coaches were completely gutted, resulting in the loss of all passenger belongings. The incident caused significant disruption to rail traffic on the Visakhapatnam–Vijayawada route, delaying several trains. The damaged coaches were detached, and replacement arrangements were made. Railway officials have deployed forensic and medical teams to investigate the exact cause of the fire, while helpline numbers were established to assist affected passengers and provide information.
