Understanding the Latest Train Fares Hiked by Indian Railways
The Indian Railways has announced a modest increase in passenger train fares, which became effective from July 1st. This revision is the first of its kind in approximately five years and primarily affects long-distance travel on Mail and Express trains. The aim of this fare adjustment is reportedly to enhance services while keeping the overall impact on passengers minimal.
Under the new fare structure, passengers traveling in non-AC Mail and Express trains will see an increase of 1 paisa per kilometer. For those opting for AC classes, the fare hike will be 2 paise per kilometer. Additionally, second-class fares for ordinary trains will increase by half a paisa per kilometer for journeys exceeding 500 kilometers.
It’s important to note that not all tickets are affected. There will be no change in fares for suburban train travel, providing relief to daily commuters. Similarly, Monthly Season Tickets (MSTs) will continue to be available at their previous rates. Furthermore, second-class travel for distances up to 500 kilometers on ordinary trains will also remain unchanged. This selective hike ensures that the burden is spread, with a focus on longer routes and premium services.
