Protests Erupt in Tripura Over Tripura Student Murder Incident

Angel Chakma, an MBA student hailing from Tripura, was tragically attacked on December 9 in Dehradun’s Selaqui area. He and his brother, Michael Chakma, were reportedly subjected to racial slurs by a group of intoxicated individuals while buying groceries. When Angel objected to these derogatory remarks, he was brutally stabbed multiple times with a knife and a rod, sustaining severe injuries to his head and neck. After battling for his life for over two weeks in a hospital, Angel succumbed to his injuries on December 26, 2025.

The senseless killing has ignited significant protests and calls for intervention, especially from the Tripura Chakma Students Association and political leaders like Pradyot Kishore Manikya, founder of Tipra Motha. They have strongly condemned the act, demanding swift justice for Angel and comprehensive measures to safeguard students from India’s Northeast living in other states. Authorities have made progress in the case, arresting five individuals in connection with the murder. However, one key accused, identified as a Nepali national, remains at large, with efforts underway to apprehend them.

The incident has prompted the Tripura police to coordinate with their Uttarakhand counterparts, ensuring a thorough investigation. Beyond legal action, there’s a growing plea for stricter laws against hate crimes and racial discrimination, alongside compensation for Angel’s grieving family. A candlelight march has also been organized in Agartala in memory of Angel Chakma, emphasizing the community’s resolve to seek justice and prevent such ‘unwarranted incidents’ in the future.
