Progress on Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains
The Vande Bharat sleeper variant has been specially designed for comfortable long and medium-distance overnight travel. Currently, two of these advanced train sets have been manufactured and are undergoing trials and commissioning. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed this in Parliament, highlighting that the official launch timeline will depend on the successful completion of these important trials.
These upcoming Vande Bharat sleeper trains are packed with modern features and passenger comforts. They will include advanced safety systems like the KAVACH automatic train protection, high acceleration for faster travel (with a design speed of 180 kmph and operating speed of 160 kmph), and enhanced fire safety measures. Passengers can also expect smooth, jerk-free journeys thanks to special couplers, along with energy efficiency from a regenerative braking system. Each train will comprise 16 coaches, offering AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier options, capable of carrying 1,128 passengers.
While one prototype Vande Bharat sleeper train is ready after trials, a second is currently being manufactured, expected by mid-October 2025. Both trains are planned to launch together to ensure continuous service. Although specific routes are yet to be finalized, there is speculation about a New Delhi-Patna route and a proposed New Delhi-Firozpur Cantonment route, aiming to connect major cities and enhance railway connectivity across the country.
